A new day dawns as bright sunlight breaks through the mist of cold morning in Kashirampara, Tripura. The adults wake ready for their daily work in the fields, the children seem excited, each one eager to leave home. 910 children belonging to the furthermost tribal region of Tripura are excited at the prospect of learning – a new school awaits –bags and umbrellas in hand, they walk down a long path, a journey that will take them to a destination of education, nourishment, and empowerment. They are the first learners, the first members of their families to have access to formal education.

Reang tribe is one of 21 scheduled tribes of the Indian state of Tripura; the tribals speak a dialect of Bru language and is locally referred to as Kau Bru. Currently, there are over 7000 children of Reang tribe out-of-school. In Kashirampara - a remote location in North Tripura, a new day begins as sunlight breaks through the mist of cold morning. The adults wake ready for a hard day’s work in the fields, the children seem excited, each one eager to leave home.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation recently expanded its reach to Tripura with an initiative that aims to bring tribal populations into the mainstream by enabling access to modern education. This project greatly benefits children belonging to the Reang tribe; they now have access to quality education, skill development, nutrition (from hygienic Mid-Day meals) and sufficient support i.e. relevant books, uniforms, and supplies. This initiative is only possible because of kind people who care about creating bright futures for Indian children, all Indian children, even the ones in the furthest regions of our country.

Educated children grow up to be resourceful individuals, reliable members of their tribe and responsible citizens of India.
