Campaign Overview
India has made considerable progress in the development of the girl child over the last decade. One of the contributing factors has been the mid-day meal scheme - reducing the cost of both education and nutrition, while also bridging gender gaps in the same. However, lockdowns across the country have brought massive disorder to mid-day meal schemes.
Our work here is two fold, as in the absence of the mid-day meal incentive, girls will be pulled out of school, losing out on both nutrition & education.
State governments are working to deliver meals to children at home & the central government has also increased the scheme’s funding by 11 percent. Although, one needs to ensure that the meals are reaching the right people.
According to a recent study published by Eat Lancet, COVID will have a huge impact on child malnutrition globally, leading to a 14.3% rise (6.7 million children) in childhood wasting. In India, 17% of children are wasted, and the girl child suffers more due to gender disparities. I believe that the mid-day meal scheme can play a huge role in continuing to nourish children, especially the girl child, thus reducing the effects of food disruption caused by the pandemic. Funds raised through Akshaya Patra Foundation will contribute to feeding these children, while also incentivizing their education.
